10 Essential Surf Tips for Complete Beginners

Ready to catch your first wave? Surfing is one of the most rewarding water sports you can learn, but starting out can feel overwhelming. Here are our top 10 tips to help you go from beach observer to wave rider.

1. Start with the Right Board

Forget the short boards you see the pros riding. As a beginner, you want a large, soft-top foam board (at least 8 feet). These boards offer maximum stability and are forgiving when you fall — which you will, and that’s perfectly okay!

2. Take a Lesson

While it’s tempting to grab a board and figure it out yourself, a qualified instructor will save you weeks of frustration. They’ll teach you proper technique, ocean safety, and how to read the waves — skills that are nearly impossible to learn from YouTube alone.

3. Master the Pop-Up on Land First

Before you even touch the water, practice your pop-up on the beach until it becomes muscle memory. Lie on your board, place your hands under your chest, and spring to your feet in one smooth motion. Repeat 50 times. Yes, 50.

4. Learn to Read the Ocean

Understanding rip currents, sets, and where waves break is fundamental to safe surfing. Spend 15 minutes watching the ocean before you paddle out. Look for channels (calm water between breaking waves) — that’s your entry path.

5. Respect the Lineup

Surfing has an unwritten code of etiquette. The surfer closest to the breaking part of the wave has priority. Don’t drop in on someone else’s wave, and always paddle around the break, not through it.

6. Stay in the Whitewash

For your first sessions, stay in the whitewash (the foamy water after waves break). You’ll have plenty of power to practice popping up without dealing with the chaos of the lineup.

7. Protect Yourself from the Sun

You’ll be in the water for hours without realizing it. Use reef-safe SPF 50+ sunscreen, and reapply every 90 minutes. A rash guard with UV protection is also a smart investment.

8. Stretch Before and After

Surfing uses muscles you didn’t know you had. A proper warm-up prevents injuries and improves your performance. Focus on shoulders, back, hips, and hamstrings.

9. Don’t Fight the Ocean

If you get caught in a current, don’t panic and don’t swim against it. Swim parallel to the shore until you’re out of the current, then head back to the beach. The ocean always wins a fight.

10. Have Fun and Be Patient

Nobody learns to surf in a day. Enjoy the process — the salt water, the sunshine, the thrill of catching even the smallest wave. Every session in the water makes you better.
